"Team building" means very varied things to different companies, loosely defined, any form of activities that help in the forming of teams, clarifying of goals, resolving of issues and building of relationships among team members are "team building" activities. So if you can imagine, any structured team building programmes conducted by professionals, as well as simple games with no particular reference to any learning objectives, like a game of bowling, can be considered “team building exercises” to some people.
We have been told before that "no rocket scientists are needed to conduct team building programmes", in our humble opinion, the opposite is also true - that "not all rocket scientists can conduct team building programmes properly".
